Spelling is most effective when it is understood as a system rather than memorized in isolation. We teach spelling through phonics, patterns, and word structure, helping students understand the rules that govern how words are formed. As students develop this understanding, they move beyond memorization toward mastery and independence. Irregular “Heart Words” that do not follow predictable patterns are taught explicitly and revisited regularly to support long-term retention.
